Basic Must-Know Siding Terminologies

Your home’s siding serves as an additional layer of defense for your home’s exterior against the elements. They also increase your home’s curb appeal and energy efficiency through insulation and catchy designs. As a homeowner, it’s in your best interest to know the basic terms relating to the siding. 1. Batten. The batten is a small strip of wood that seals the joints on wood siding. For modern siding materials, this refers to the old wood siding that uses boards and battens to fill the spaces between the boards, and the battens are the small objects that go in between them.

2. Channel. This is the area on your siding that provides enough space for another piece of siding or trims to be placed.

3. Exposure. Also known as a “reveal”, the exposure pertains to the width of a siding board.

4. Fascia. Closely tied to soffits, the fascia is a board that runs horizontally and protects the intersection on top of an exterior wall and the overhanging edge of your roofing system.

5.Flashing. This component is a piece of metal that is placed above windows and doors to prevent water from infiltrating your home and protects you against water damage.

6. Miter Joint. This refers to the intersection point of two panels at a right angle. Normally, each panel is cut at a 45-degree angle, similar to soffits to enhance your home’s appeal.

7. Plumb or Square. This means that an object’s measurement is exactly 90 degrees from a leveled, horizontal surface. This can be achieved by using a “square” or a “speed square” to get a perfect 90 degree level between two objects. Also, ensure that your siding is square to your exterior wall to avoid crooked siding.
