Debunking Asphalt Shingle Myths

Asphalt shingle roofs are highly reliable because they’re durable and versatile. They’re a popular roofing material across the country. However, there are some common misconceptions about this type of roofing.

Roofing professionals debunk some of these myths in this post.

Asbestos Is Used in Making Asphalt Shingles

Some people believe asphalt shingles contain asbestos, which causes respiratory issues and can sometimes be fatal. It’s true that asphalt shingles contained asbestos before. But since it was discovered in the 1960s that asbestos was dangerous, roofing manufacturers have stopped including this substance in their shingles. Today, asphalt shingles contain mineral stabilizers instead of asbestos, so you can be sure asphalt roofs are safe for your family.

New Shingles Should Never Lose Granules

Granules give asphalt shingles their color and protect them against ultraviolet rays. After installation, your shingles will lose the excess granules, so you may notice them in your gutters. However, if granule loss has continued for a long time after installation or it has already resulted in bald spots on your roof, you should consider this a red flag. Call your roofer immediately to find out what’s causing the problem.

Dark-Colored Asphalt Shingle Roofs Can Make Your Interior Warmer

Dark colors tend to absorb more heat, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you should stay away from dark-colored shingles. You can still opt for a dark-colored asphalt roof as long as you maintain excellent attic insulation and ventilation.

Good attic insulation prevents outside temperatures from affecting your indoor comfort, while attic ventilation helps remove humidity and heat buildup in your attic. These two elements are crucial in preserving your roof and home’s energy efficiency.
