How Does Cold Weather Affect Doors and Windows?

Building a snowman, ice skating and delighting in a mug of hot cocoa — winter has officially arrived. As exciting as these winter activities may be, unfortunately, the cold and frosty weather can adversely affect your home’s windows and doors. In this post, a trusted siding replacement contractor talks about the most common issues your windows and doors may encounter during the winter months.

Ice Formation

In the winter, ice tends to form in the open spaces between doors and windows and the frames they are installed in. When warm, moisture-filled air leaks out through these minute openings, it freezes when in contact with the cold outdoor air. This makes opening and closing the windows and doors difficult without cracking the weatherstripping. When your current weatherstripping has become bent or cracked, it will no longer seal, further causing air drafts and water leaks.

Hardware Failure

Frost or cold-weather stress can also affect hardware, such as latches, hinges, handles, and other mechanical parts. Once this happens, doors and windows become more susceptible to structural damage, resulting in an array of problems. According to window and siding installation specialists, hardware failure not only leads to decreased security but also reduces the energy efficiency of the home.

Shrinking and Warping

For certain materials, too much humidity can compromise their structural integrity. Wooden frames can shrink in extreme cold and begin to warp or bow when exposed to varying levels of moisture, which is why wood windows and doors must be regularly treated with a sealer or paint to maintain their condition. While there is no stopping shrinkage, it can be minimized by investing in a rigid material and performing proper maintenance.
