How Trees Can Damage Your Roof

While trees can enhance your landscaping and provide shade and protection, when not managed properly, they can inflict damage to your roof and eventually the rest of your home. In order to minimize the adverse effects of tall, overhanging trees surrounding your roof, it is important to know how these trees can damage your roof in the first place. An exterior renovations specialist will discuss them below.

Hanging Branches

If a large, dense branch falls on a roof, it can crack asphalt shingles or puncture metal sheets. Even a seemingly lighter branch can leave dents or scratches on the roof surface, which is not only unsightly but can also lead to cracks and leaks in the future. Older trees that are decaying due to termites or insects are also not a good sign. To ward off these things, make sure your trees are trimmed regularly.

Moss Growth

A tree that provides shade is usually a pleasant sight. However, when a tree prevents sunlight from drying a damp roof, it can become a breeding ground for moss, which can eventually spread throughout the roof. Small patches of moss are usually not a problem, but once the moisture travels underneath the shingles or tiles, it can wreak havoc on the components, threatening the structural integrity of the system. To minimize the chance of moss growth, trim any overhanging branches or install algae-resistant shingles during roof replacement.

Falling Trees

A fallen tree on the roof is destructive most of the time. It can cause extensive damage and lead to costly repairs down the road. Keep your property trees well-maintained and look for rotting parts. If an older tree does not look stable or is too close to your roof, it is best to call a local arborist to safely remove the threat.
