Should You Be Concerned About Your Roof’s Granule Loss?

Asphalt shingles remain one of the most popular roofing options in the U.S. This material is known for its durability, longevity and protection. The shingles contain granules, which protect them against the harmful ultraviolet rays and add resistance to fire.

Find out if you should be worried when these granules fall off from a local exterior renovations expert.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Granule loss can occur due to blistering shingles. Other causes of this common roofing problem are aging, excessive foot traffic, and wear and tear. Also, weather extremes, such as hail storms, can dislodge granules and cause them to fall. Your roof would need replacement if the shingles are blistering and losing granules.

If you see that your new roof is losing granules, have it inspected. Significant granule loss can indicate manufacturing defects. Immediately contact your installer or manufacturer to have the problem addressed.

When It’s Normal

After a roof replacement, it’s normal for asphalt shingles to lose granules. Manufacturers add up to 40 percent more granules than needed to the shingles during the manufacturing process. Excess granules may have been linked with the embedded granules but aren’t actually attached to the shingles. These granules may fall during shipping, installation, or after it rains. Moreover, according to engineers, up to 15 percent of the granule surface of new shingles will erode even before the material gets exposed.

When your roof is reaching the end of its life, it can experience shingle granule loss. Over the years, the adhesion between the granules and shingles becomes weaker. If granules are falling due to the age of your roof, consider getting a new one.
