The Importance of Your Roof’s Underlayment

Your roofing is composed of various important components. There is more to the integrity of your roof than what you see on the surface. One of the most important parts is the underlayment, which contributes to your roof’s overall stability. In this post, trusted roof and window replacement professional Hunterdon Roofing, Siding and Window Company discusses the importance of your roof’s underlayment.

The Underlayment

The underlayment is installed under your roofing materials. It’s a water-proof barrier that serves as an additional layer of protection. It is an added protection of the roof against adverse weather conditions. It prevents water damage and leakage. Roofing underlayment has three types: asphalt-saturated, non-bitumen synthetic underlayment, and rubberized asphalt underlayment.

3 Types of Underlayment

  1. Asphalt Saturated felts are applied over the roof deck before the asphalt shingles. It’s known to be a reliable, classic, and traditional underlayment before synthetic materials became popular. Asphalt Saturated felts are flexible and water-resistant. It’s affordable and normally bought ready to use. It’s advised to consult a roof replacement professional if you’re interested in switching to this organic felt.

  2. Non-Bitumen Synthetic is the most common roofing underlayment nowadays. It is designed to fully cover the entirety of most roofs without being costly. It is preferred by most homeowners and roofers. It is known to be an upgrade from the asphalt-saturated with its better water resistance.

  3. Rubberized Asphalt is known to have the best resistance to water out of all the types. It has a higher percentage of asphalt and rubber polymer. It’s designed with a protective membrane and a sticky back, creating a waterproof seal. Its quality makes it more costly than the first two underlayments.
