Battens

Board and batten siding installation is one of the original styles of siding. In it, the siding boards are connected to each other lengthwise and the gaps in between are filled with another narrower piece of wood. This wooden strip is known as the batten and it’s why the whole system is called “board and batten” siding.

Course and Channel

A course pertains to an entire piece of siding board that covers your exteriors from one end of the wall to the other. Installers will use multiple courses to finish covering up the entirety of the wall. On the other hand, channels are grooves on the underside of a siding board. These grooves allow a second siding board to “snap” on the first, allowing for several channels to be connected to each other.

Furring Strips

Sometimes walls are not finished perfectly flat. This can cause siding boards to be installed unevenly. Contractors will use furring strips to cover the wall and give it a more straightened and flat surface for the siding to be attached to.
